Are you a search & rescue volunteer? Your gear list should be portable, efficient, but also comprehensive. Some of the best gear that you can have in your search and rescue pack are items that have multiple uses in the field. Here are 10 items that you need in your search & rescue gear pack. If you need your annual bloodborne pathogen training, check out our Bloodborne Pathogen Course!

10 Items You Need in Your

Search & Rescue Gear Pack

1. Cloth Tape Measure

A cloth tape measure is a great addition to your search and rescue kit. You should use one to measure potential clues, such as tracks. Or even put next to clues or tracks that you take photos of and then upload them to a search management platform, such as CalTopo.

2. Contractor Trash Bags

Might seem weird, but contractor trash bags make an excellent addition to your search and rescue kit. In fact, many teams require you to carry them. Contractor trash bags make excellent emergency ponchos, bivvys, and you can use them to protect clues, your gear, and sleep on, should you be out overnight.

3. Glow Sticks or Chem Lights

Having a good set of glow sticks in your pack can be important for night-time searches. They’re lightweight, inexpensive, and can be used to mark last-known points, flag hazards, identify team members, or mark a trail in low-visibility conditions.

4. Navigation Protractor

Manual map reading and orienteering tools are still important. Items such as military protractors can be excellent additions to your search and rescue kit. Get one that has markings for different scales to make jumping from map to map efficient.

5. CAT Tourniquet

Most search and rescue kits don’t need a major trauma kit (though each team should have at least one). However, incorporating a legitimate C-A-T tourniquet can be a lightweight, practical method to carry to potentially stem hemorrhagic bleeding.

6. A Multi-Tool

While knives are fun to carry, they aren’t always the most practical. A good multi-tool, on the other hand, such as the Leatherman Wingman, are more efficient ways to carry a blade while also providing more tools. A good rule of thumb is to carry tools that are not single purpose tools, unless the value of the single purpose tool outweighs the weight and size issues. A knife, in most search and rescue scenarios, is not that valuable as a standalone tool.

7. Paracord

You only need two things to conquer the world: paracord and duct tape. Mil spec paracord is a versatile tool in the wilderness. For search and rescue, it’s no different. A small bundle of paracord takes up almost no space in your pack, but can be used for lashing a broken pack strap, making an emergency harness, or creating emergency shelters.

8. Duct tape

Next to paracord, good duct tape is another important tool to put in your search and rescue pack. A travel size pack of duct tape works stores perfectly and is lightweight. It’s a multipurpose item that can solve a wide range of small problems quickly in the field.

9. Webbing

Tubular webbing is a great tool to keep in your search and rescue bag (most teams require it!). Webbing makes a great rescue harness, anchor points, gear slings, and has a wide range of potential uses.

10. Whistle

A whistle is a great tool to take into the wilderness with you and is a perfect (often required) addition to your search and rescue kit. A whistle can be used to communicate with others. A whistle can often be heard above voices, especially in rain and windy weather.

Summing It Up

A proper search and rescue kit includes items that can have multiple uses. These include duct tape, a multi-tool, whistles, and other items. The goal is to prepare for a wide-range of conditions without packing too much gear that is often unnecessary.

When disaster strikes—whether it’s a hurricane ravaging coastal communities, a wildfire threatening neighborhoods, or a mass casualty incident—the difference between chaos and coordinated action often comes down to one critical framework: the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

What is NIMS and Why Should You Care?

NIMS is the invisible infrastructure that powers America’s emergency response. Established by the Department of Homeland Security in 2004, it provides the playbook that enables firefighters, police officers, medical personnel, and other responders from different agencies to work together seamlessly during crisis situations.

Think of NIMS as the universal language of emergency management—when everyone speaks it, collaboration becomes second nature, even under the most challenging circumstances.

The Building Blocks of NIMS

Incident Command System (ICS)

At the heart of NIMS lies the Incident Command System—a clear organizational structure that establishes who’s in charge of what during an emergency. ICS eliminates the “too many chiefs” problem by creating a unified chain of command where responsibilities are clearly defined and everyone knows their role.

Multi-Agency Coordination Systems (MACS)

Major disasters don’t respect jurisdictional boundaries. When multiple organizations need to work together, MACS provides the framework for coordinating their efforts, sharing critical information, and allocating resources where they’re needed most.

Public Information and Warning

During emergencies, accurate information can save lives. NIMS emphasizes the importance of delivering clear, consistent messages to the public—helping people understand what’s happening and what actions they should take to stay safe.

Resource Management

When every minute counts, knowing what resources are available and how to deploy them efficiently is crucial. NIMS standardizes how emergency resources are requested, tracked, and utilized, eliminating confusion and duplication of efforts.

Command and Management

Different agencies often have different protocols and priorities. NIMS bridges these gaps by establishing unified command structures that allow diverse organizations to collaborate effectively toward common goals.

The Real-World Impact of NIMS

NIMS isn’t just about organizational charts and protocols—it delivers tangible benefits that make a difference when disasters strike:

Seamless Collaboration: With everyone using the same terminology and procedures, miscommunication is minimized, and interagency cooperation is maximized.

Adaptability: Whether responding to a local traffic accident or a catastrophic natural disaster, NIMS scales to fit the situation at hand.

Optimized Response: By eliminating redundant efforts and ensuring resources go where they’re most needed, NIMS helps responders do more with what they have.

Continuous Improvement: Through after-action reviews and lessons learned, NIMS creates a cycle of ongoing enhancement in emergency response capabilities.

Who Uses NIMS?

NIMS isn’t exclusive to government agencies or professional emergency responders. Its principles apply to everyone involved in managing incidents, including:

Federal, state, tribal, and local government agencies

Private sector organizations

Nonprofit and volunteer groups

Healthcare providers

Educational institutions

Taking the Next Step

Understanding NIMS is essential for anyone involved in emergency management or community resilience. If you’re interested in learning more, NIMS training programs are widely available and can help you become a more effective part of your community’s emergency response network.

Remember: When emergencies happen, having a common framework like NIMS doesn’t just improve efficiency—it saves lives.

Thunderstorms are awe-inspiring displays of nature’s power, but they also bring with them the potential for danger and destruction. To protect ourselves and our loved ones, it is crucial to be well-prepared for the unexpected fury of a thunderstorm. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore essential steps and safety measures to ensure you’re ready to face the tempest head-on.

1. Understanding Thunderstorms

Before delving into preparation, it’s essential to understand thunderstorms. These atmospheric disturbances are typically accompanied by lightning, heavy rain, strong winds, and sometimes hail. Thunderstorms can arise suddenly and vary in intensity, making them a formidable force to reckon with. Their potential to cause flash floods, tornadoes, and wildfires adds to the urgency of being prepared.

2. Stay Informed: Weather Alerts

Knowledge is your most potent weapon in the face of a thunderstorm. Keep an eye on weather updates and forecasts from reliable sources. The National Weather Service and weather apps on your smartphone are excellent resources for real-time information. Familiarize yourself with weather terminology like “watch” and “warning.” A “watch” means that conditions are favorable for a thunderstorm, while a “warning” indicates that a thunderstorm is imminent or ongoing.

3. Create a Thunderstorm Emergency Kit

Prepare a designated emergency kit that includes essentials such as:

Battery-powered flashlight and extra batteries

Portable weather radio to receive updates even if the power goes out

First aid supplies, including bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers

Bottled water and non-perishable snacks to sustain you during power outages

Important documents, such as identification, insurance papers, and medical records, stored in a waterproof container

Personal hygiene items like hand sanitizer, wet wipes, and tissue papers

Extra cellphone charger or power bank to stay connected

4. Safeguard Your Home

Your home should be a safe haven during a thunderstorm. Take the following precautions to protect your property and loved ones:

Trim tree branches near your house that could potentially fall on it during high winds.

Secure loose outdoor items like patio furniture, toys, and garden tools to prevent them from becoming projectiles.

Invest in surge protectors to safeguard electronic devices from power surges caused by lightning strikes.

If you live in a flood-prone area, consider installing a sump pump and raising electrical outlets above potential flood levels.

5. Create a Family Emergency Plan

In the event of a severe thunderstorm, having a family emergency plan can save lives. Discuss and practice the plan with all family members, especially children. The plan should include:

Identifying safe areas in the home, such as a basement or interior room, away from windows, for shelter during the storm.

Designating an emergency meeting spot outside the home in case evacuation becomes necessary.

Assigning responsibilities to family members, like gathering essential items and caring for pets.

6. Lightning Safety

Lightning is one of the most dangerous aspects of thunderstorms. Remember the mantra, “When thunder roars, go indoors!” Avoid open areas, tall structures, and metal objects during a thunderstorm. Inside, stay away from electrical appliances and plumbing fixtures. Do not take baths or showers during a thunderstorm.

Conclusion

Embracing nature’s wrath begins with preparedness. By staying informed, creating a thunderstorm emergency kit, safeguarding your home, and having a family emergency plan in place, you’ll be ready to face thunderstorms with confidence and resilience. Remember, being prepared could be the difference between safety and vulnerability when nature unleashes its thunderous fury. Stay vigilant, stay safe, and protect what matters most.

Mitigating and preventing domestic unrest and terrorism is difficult to do while adhering to the Constitution. Thus, it’s critical to address root causes. One of those causes and one of the most pressing risks to national security and stability, and broader geopolitical stability, is food insecurity.

Even in the United States, there is a significant percentage of people who struggle to get enough to eat (CBS reported a study this past March that showed nearly 1 in 4 Americans don’t have enough food https://www.cbsnews.com/news/one-in-four-americans-food-insecure/). This has grown significantly over the past 18 months, with countries dealing with high inflation, or a lack of wheat-based foodstuffs brought on by the Ukraine-Russian war.

Research by Bellinger and Kattleman (article reference below) showed that there was a significant correlation to a nation’s food security and the number of domestic terrorist acts committed. This is due to food insecurity being seen as a symptom of weak government, thus creating more of an opportunity for extremists to recruit terrorists. And the more terrorists the more potential attacks.

Interestingly, their research also shows a correlation between increased protein intake and fewer acts of terrorism.

Regardless of if you view this as a private sector matter or something that the public sector needs to handle, you can help.

Emergencies can happen at any time, and they can be devastating for families. That’s why it’s essential to have an emergency preparedness plan in place. Creating a family emergency plan can help you and your loved ones stay safe, and it can help you to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies. In this post, we’ll guide you through a few of the steps to consider when creating a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan for your family. You can find other great emergency preparedness tools at Ready.gov.

Step 1: Identify potential hazards

The first step in creating an emergency preparedness plan is to identify potential hazards that could affect your family. Depending on where you live, the hazards you need to consider might include:

Natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and floods.

Human-made disasters like fires, chemical spills, and terrorist attacks.

Medical emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, and severe allergic reactions.

Identifying potential hazards will help you determine the types of emergencies you should prepare for and the best ways to respond to them.

Step 2: Create an emergency communication plan

The next step is to create an emergency communication plan. This plan should include the following:

A list of emergency contacts, including family members, friends, and neighbors who can help you in an emergency.

A meeting place where your family can gather in case you get separated during an emergency.

A way to communicate with each other during an emergency is critical. Communication could include a group chat or walkie-talkies. Getting a GMRS radio license is a great option for a backup communication plan.

A plan for communicating with emergency services, including the police, fire department, and ambulance.

Ensure that everyone in your family knows the emergency communication plan and understands what to do if an emergency occurs.

Step 3: Build an emergency kit

Your emergency kit should contain essential items that your family will need in an emergency. Some of the things you might want to include are:

Water and non-perishable food for at least three days

A first aid kit

Flashlights and extra batteries

Blankets and warm clothing

Personal hygiene items like soap, toothbrushes, and toilet paper

Important documents like birth certificates, passports, and insurance policies. A good idea is to keep these in a packet in a fireproof case or box that can be accessed quickly if needed.

Store your emergency kit in a place that’s easy to access, like a closet or under the bed. Perhap consider having a backpack that’s easily grabbed.

Step 4: Stay informed

Staying informed is critical during an emergency. Make sure you have a reliable way to receive emergency alerts and warnings, such as a weather radio or smartphone app. You should also stay tuned to local news and follow the instructions of emergency personnel.

Step 5: Practice your plan

Finally, practice your emergency preparedness plan with your family. Hold drills to test your communication plan and make sure everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency. Review and update your plan regularly to ensure it stays up-to-date.

Conclusion

Emergencies can be scary, but having an emergency preparedness plan in place can help you and your family stay safe. By following these steps, you can create a comprehensive plan that will help you respond to times of crisis.

Tornadoes are among nature’s most destructive and terrifying phenomena. With their powerful winds and swirling vortex, tornadoes can cause widespread devastation and pose a significant threat to life and property. Being prepared and knowing what to do during a tornado can make a crucial difference in ensuring the safety of yourself and your loved ones. In this blog post, we will provide you with essential tornado safety tips that can help you stay prepared and protected.

Stay Informed: One of the first and most crucial steps in tornado safety is to stay informed about weather conditions. Pay close attention to local weather forecasts, radio updates, or weather alert apps to receive timely warnings about tornado watches or warnings in your area. Familiarize yourself with the difference between a tornado watch (when conditions are favorable for tornadoes) and a tornado warning (when a tornado has been spotted or detected by radar).

Create an Emergency Plan: Developing a well-thought-out emergency plan is vital for tornado safety. Discuss the plan with your family members or roommates, ensuring everyone knows what to do in case of a tornado. Identify a safe shelter area within your home, such as a basement or an interior room on the lowest level, away from windows. If you live in an apartment building, find out if there is a designated tornado shelter available for residents.

Build an Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit that includes essential items to sustain you and your family members for at least 72 hours. This kit should include items like non-perishable food, bottled water, a first aid kit, flashlights, batteries, a battery-operated weather radio, necessary medications, and important documents. Keep the emergency kit in an easily accessible location, such as your designated shelter area or a sturdy backpack.

Secure Your Home: Make sure your home is tornado-ready by securing it against high winds. Reinforce doors and windows, and consider installing storm shutters or impact-resistant glass if you live in a tornado-prone area. Additionally, trim trees near your house and remove any loose objects or debris in your yard that could become dangerous projectiles during a tornado.

Identify Shelter Locations: Identify multiple shelter locations, both at home and in public areas. In addition to your designated safe area at home, know the locations of nearby tornado shelters, community safe rooms, or designated evacuation centers. If you’re outside when a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter immediately in a sturdy building. Avoid seeking refuge in vehicles, mobile homes, or structures with wide-span roofs.

Stay Alert and Take Immediate Action: When a tornado warning is issued or you observe signs of an approaching tornado, take immediate action. Move quickly to your designated safe area, bringing your emergency kit with you if time allows. If you’re outside and unable to find shelter, seek the lowest lying area, such as a ditch or culvert, and cover your head with your arms. Stay away from bridges and overpasses, as they can be extremely dangerous during tornadoes.

Stay Connected: During a tornado or severe weather event, it’s important to stay connected with others. Use your mobile phone to check for updates, send text messages to family and friends, and let them know you’re safe. However, avoid making unnecessary phone calls to keep the lines open for emergency communication.

Conclusion: Tornadoes can strike with little warning, leaving a path of destruction in their wake. By following these tornado safety tips, you can significantly increase your chances of staying safe during these intense weather events. Remember to stay informed, create an emergency plan, and prepare an emergency kit. Identify safe shelter locations and take immediate action when a tornado warning is issued. By prioritizing your safety and being well

In today’s competitive market environment, the body copy of your entry must lead the reader through a series of disarmingly simple thoughts.

Wide width image

All your supporting arguments must be communicated with simplicity and charm. And in such a way that the reader will read on. (After all, that’s a reader’s job: to read, isn’t it?) And by the time your readers have reached this point in the finished copy, you will have convinced them that you not only respect their intelligence, but you also understand their needs as consumers.

Full width image

As a result of which, your entry will repay your efforts. Take your sales; simply put, they will rise. Likewise your credibility. There’s every chance your competitors will wish they’d placed this entry, not you. While your customers will have probably forgotten that your competitors even exist. Which brings us, by a somewhat circuitous route, to another small point, but one which we feel should be raised.

Simple image (default size)

This is <g class="gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="11" data-gr-id="11">dummy</g> copy.
